UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Marcos Rigol, Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) co-hire and professor of physics in the Eberly College of Science, has just been named a distinguished professor by the Penn State Office of Faculty Affairs. Rigol was one of 10 professors to receive this accolade.

This title is given to a limited number of professors who are seen as leaders in their specific field of research or have had significant accomplishments in teaching, research, creative activity or service.

Rigol joined Penn State as an associate professor in 2013 and is known for his work in the field of quantum thermalization — how particles eventually reach an equilibrium temperature through their interactions. His work has changed the way people think about quantum dynamics in systems with many particles. He has also conducted seminal work on integrable quantum systems such as the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble.

He is also fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
