History

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) was created in 2012 with the specific objective of coupling computing and data sciences to specific disciplines with the aim of advancing Penn State’s strategic priorities in interdisciplinary research.

In its new form, the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) seeks to advance Penn State science through computational and quantum theory, high-performance computing, Artificial Intelligence and data science, driving technological breakthroughs that redefine what is possible.

  • 2012 — Dr. Padma Raghavan appointed founding director of the Institute for CyberScience, established  through the Office of the Vice President for Research.
  • 2013/2014 — First cohort of ICDS Co-Hires joins Penn State.
  • 2017 — Dr. Jenni Evans  appointed director.
  • 2019 — The institute was renamed the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences to be more aligned with the research community.
  • 2025 — Dr. Guido Cervone appointed director
  • 2026 – ICDS is leading the University wide AI Cluster hire co-funded by Provost Fotis Sotiropoulos to support his vision that Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing the Sciences, Engineering and Humanities.
