UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Guido Cervone has been named the director of the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) per an announcement from the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research.
Cervone, who served as the interim director of ICDS since April 2024, seeks to drive strategic alignment between the University’s major research initiatives and computational infrastructure, including the Roar supercomputer; foster cross-college partnerships in core areas of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) by expanding the co-hire faculty model; and strengthen research support services and funding opportunities for researchers early on in their careers.
“Dr. Cervone has ably guided ICDS through a year of major advances, including expanded high-performance computing access and new interdisciplinary research initiatives,” Andrew Read, senior vice president for research at Penn State, said in the Penn State News article. “His leadership sets the stage for ICDS to further elevate Penn State’s national stature in artificial intelligence (AI), simulation science and big-data innovation.”
Cervone is also a professor of geography, of meteorology and of atmospheric science at Penn State, a member of the Geoinformatics and Earth Observation Laboratory in the Department of Geography, and an adjunct professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, in Pisa, Italy. He was recently also appointed as chair of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting program committee.
In 2005, Cervone received his doctorate from George Mason University in computational and informatics with a focus on AI.
