For example:Guido Cervone1,2
1 Department of Geography and Meteorology & Atmospheric Science, Penn State University
2 Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, Penn State University
For who should include an ICDS affiliation, see FAQ #Q6.4. Acknowledging Intellectual Communities & Other Contributions
In some cases, projects did not receive ICDS funding or use facilities operated by ICDS, but the project still benefited from the general intellectual environment provided by ICDS. For example, a project idea might have been the outgrowth of a discussion following an ICDS seminar. Or graduate students may have been receiving training as part of an ICDS workshop. In such cases, ICDS encourages authors to describe the contribution of ICDS or the relevant ICDS-affiliated Centers in their own words, typically in the acknowledgements section of publications, and include the ICDS RRID. For example: This project is based on a collaboration developed thanks to the 2025 ICDS Symposium organized by Penn State’s Institute for Computational & Data Sciences (RRID:SCR_025154).Quick start guide
Use this table to help decide what ICDS language to include in your work:| Situation | What you should do | Example (compact) |
|---|---|---|
| You used Roar or other ICDS compute resources for analysis or modeling. | Cite ICDS Roar including RRID(s); typically in Acknowledgements or Methods. | “Computational support was provided by the ICDS Roar Core Facility (RRID:SCR_026424).” |
| You worked with RISE expertise (e.g., to setup data workflows). | Cite the relevant core facility including RRID; typically in Acknowledgements or Methods. | “We acknowledge support from the RISE Core Facility (RRID:SCR_026426).” |
| Your project received funding (e.g., ICDS Seed grant) or in-kind support (e.g., READ credits) from ICDS . | Credit ICDS funding using the specific award ID, typically in the Funding/Acknowledgements section. | “… was supported in part by ICDS Seed Grant ICDS_MSYY_XXXXXX.” |
| Both ICDS funding and ICDS infrastructure were used. | Include both a funding acknowledgement and an RRID based resource citation. | “….was supported by ICDS Seed Grant ICDS_MSYY_XXXXXX; computational infrastructure was provided by the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) (RRID:SCR_025154).” |
| You are giving a talk, poster, or media interview about ICDS-supported work. | Include a similar acknowledgement/credit whenever practical text (condensed if needed) on slides, posters, and releases. | “This work was supported by ICDS and performed using the Roar supercomputer at Penn State.” |
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Why do acknowledgements, affiliations, and resource IDs matter?
A: Research communities, funding agencies, and journals increasingly expect transparency about: (1) what research resources were used, (2) who provided funding or other support, and (3) how other researchers can replicate your study. Clear and consistent ICDS citations and credits help:- Demonstrate compliance with sponsor and publisher requirements,
- Make the role of shared facilities visible in the scholarly record, and
- Support continued investment in Penn State’s computational and data-intensive research infrastructure.
Q2: When should I acknowledge/cite use of ICDS facilities and resources?
A: Cite or otherwise acknowledge ICDS when publishing or presenting research that made use of ICDS infrastructure (e.g., Roar Collab) or services (e.g., RISE support). Citing a computational facility, instrument, dataset, software package, or other resource is analogous to citing papers, making it easier for readers to understand and replicate your work.Q3: What are Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs)?
A: Research institutes are often supported by a combination of external grants and internal funding. Tracking their contributions to publications is important for demonstrating value to the scientific community and return on investment. Funding agencies, professional organizations and publishers often recommend using Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs) to make these contributions findable and trackable. When ICDS resources were used, please include an acknowledgement that uses the appropriate RRID(s).List of ICDS RRIDs
The following Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs) are currently available:- ICDS (institute): RRID:SCR_025154, Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (Google Scholar)
- Roar: RRID:SCR_026424, Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences Roar Core Facility (Google Scholar)
- RISE: RRID:SCR_026426, Pennsylvania State University RISE Core Facility (Google Scholar)
Q4: When should I acknowledge/credit ICDS for providing funding and other support?
A: Researchers should credit or otherwise acknowledge ICDS when ICDS has provided funding or formal support for your project (for example, seed grants, awards, or programmatic support). ICDS support that should be explicitly acknowledged includes:- ICDS Seed Grants (e.g., Mid-Scale, Quantum SuperSEED, Seed Grant Program)
- Rising Researcher, Faculty Upskilling, and Explore Grants
- RISE Seed Grants and other awards or programs administered by ICDS or its Research Hubs
- Usage of Roar open-queue and/or READ credits
- Startup, and/or Retention funds contributed by ICDS
- Include ICDS funding information in the Funding or Acknowledgements or similar section of manuscripts you submit to journals, conferences and pre-print servers.
- Use your specific award ID where possible (for example, ICDS_MS25_XXXXXX, ICDS_EG25_XXXXXX, ICDS_RR25_XXXXXX).
- Include similar acknowledgements in related presentations, posters, press releases, and when practical social media posts and media interviews.
Q5: How can I find my ICDS award ID?
A: Starting in 2026, your award notification email should include the ICDS award ID to acknowledge. If you are unsure of your award ID, please contact icds@psu.edu. Most ICDS award IDs are based on the InfoReady submission number and use the following patterns:- MidScale: ICDS_MSYY_XXXXXX
